A Chronological History of Excellence



1947 Visiting Nurse Service was founded.

1966 Medicare certification was obtained — one of the first home care agencies in the nation to receive.


1978 Homemaker program launched in response to community need. (Now called VNS Personal Care Services.)

1979 Hospice program started after a community pilot program. (Now called Hospice of VNS.)

1984 Durable medical equipment and oxygen services added. (Now called VNS Equipment & Supplies.)

1994 Freestanding inpatient Hospice Care Center opened.

1997 Opened infusion therapy services center. (Now called Advanced Infusion Services.) 
Became an affiliate of the Akron General Health System.

2005 Rose Lane Health Center added — 171 bed skilled nursing facility.

2006 VNS Equipment & Supplies and Advanced Infusion Services moved into new facility at 160 Opportunity Parkway. 

VNS Personal Care Services opened another office — West Akron. 

The palliative care program of Hospice of VNS was recognized as one of the top programs in the country.
