 June 1 or 10 – Building New Relationships / Developing Support

Creating friendships and building new relationships can be very difficult after the death of a loved one. This support group will offer suggestions on ways to begin building new friendships and support systems through learning to trust again, and being open to new challenges. Other aspects of relationship building will also be discussed. Two sessions on this topic will be held. Monday, June 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Buckeye Room at Rose Lane Health Center located at 5425 High Mill Ave. N.W. in Massillon. Wednesday, June 10 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Hospice of VNS Justin T.  June 15 - 17 Camp Promise

Camp Promise is an annual free camp offered by the Hospice of VNS Center for Loss and Hope to help children ages 6 – 11 process a significant loss, such as a parent, grandparent or sibling. The children will learn to manage and understand their grief through creative activities such as craft-making, music, drama, and play therapy. This year the camp will be held June 15 – 17, 2009 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.


 July 6 or 8 – Dealing with Fatigue and Lack of Energy During Grief

It is difficult for people experiencing grief to keep up with their daily activities, or to continue functioning at the level in which they had previously functioned. Grief is exhausting work. This support group will help to support those who are moving along the journey of grief as they begin to incorporate a habit of healthy living into their daily lives. Two sessions on this topic will be held. Monday, July 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Buckeye Room at Rose Lane Health Center located at 5425 High Mill Ave. N.W. in Massillon. Wednesday, July 8 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Hospice of VNS Justin T. Rogers Care Center located at 3358 Ridgewood Road in Akron. There is no fee to attend either session.  August 3 or 12 – Helping Others to Help Ourselves Support Group

As we move along the journey of grief, we come to understand the importance of reaching out to others who might be just beginning the grief journey. In reaching out to others, we are actually helping ourselves to heal from our own experience of loss and grief. This support group will help to support those who are moving along the journey of grief as they begin to incorporate this important element of helping others into their daily lives. Two sessions on this topic will be held. Monday, August 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Buckeye Room at Rose Lane Health Center located at 5425 High Mill Ave. N.W. in Massillon. Wednesday, August 12 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Hospice of VNS Justin T. Rogers Care Center located at 3358 Ridgewood Road in Akron. There is no fee to attend either session.  September 25 - Recipe for Comfort: A Celebration of Food

The chef prepares (demonstration style) a full course meal for the audience. The chef’s table of 8, reserved for the Title Sponsor, will partake in the courses the chef prepares. The other guests will eat the same meal prepared by the staff of the Hilton kitchen. The evening begins with a Patron Party, which includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a meet-and-greet with the chef. A silent auction runs throughout the evening. The event raises funds for end-of-life patient care and supportive services at Hospice and Palliative Care of Visiting Nurse Service. Past featured chefs include Bobbie & Jamie Deen; Curtis Stone; and Dante Boccuzzi. Please check back again for more details. Ongoing Bereavement Classes

 Series of Classes

Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service provides bereavement support programs in group settings for those in our community who have experienced a loss. There is no cost for these programs. If you would prefer to talk with someone individually, please call for an appointment. Evening appointments are possible. All sessions meet at the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service Justin T. Rogers Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, unless otherwise noted. Some support groups/programs require registration.  TRUSTED SHARING SUPPORT GROUP

An eight-week series for adults who wish to learn what they might experience during the grieving process. Group members share their stories, emotions, victories and hopes. Group members can expect to receive loving support from group leaders, information on the grieving process, and tools for handling the normal grief response. Three series will be held in 2009, all on Thursday’s, beginning January 8, May 14 and September 10 from 2 - 4 p.m. or 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

 HEALING JOURNEY SUPPORT GROUP

A six-week series focusing on rebuilding life and incorporating hope after the death of a loved one. Group members will help normalize the grief experience through camaraderie with each other, the sharing of feelings/stories, support and providing an incentive to make new friends and develop new interests as soon as they are able. Two series will be held in 2009, all on Tuesday’s, beginning March 17 and July 21 from 2 - 4 p.m. or 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

 MOVING ON SUPPORT GROUP

This once a month group focuses on supporting those who are moving along the journey of grief and are now beginning to incorporate new behaviors in their lives as they attempt to create their “new normal.” In 2009, this group will continue to meet the second Wednesday of each month from 2 - 3:30 p.m.

 MOVING ON FAMILY SUPPORT SERIES

A six-week program for adults with children under 18 years of age. The focus of this support series is to address communication challenges, family identity, and to help focus on the actual loss for each family member. An art therapist works with the children to help them express memories and feelings tied to the loss. Call for dates of the next series.

 INDIVIDUAL GRIEF COUNSELING

One-on-one grief counseling is an option for individuals who either need more privacy in expressing their reaction to loss or who are unable to attend group meetings. Call for more information.
