In 1977 one of the first workbooks for aphasia rehabilitation was developed by
Kathryn
Kilpatrick, a speech and language pathologist who has worked
with patients in their homes since 1974. At that time the title was “Therapy
Guide for the Adult with Speech and Language Disorders,” and it quickly became
one of the standard speech therapy rehabilitation productions and is still a
very popular product three decades later.
Kathryn identified a need for materials that families and caregivers could use
in between therapy sessions. One of the features that she deemed important was
to have the products in large print and organized so that materials could be
easily located.

met the basic needs, but additional products were created to meet the various
interests and levels of functioning of adults with neurological deficits. The
products were also updated and the titles were changed omitting the word adult
when many therapists reported that they found these materials also applicable to
the school age population as well.
Activity professionals were finding these products to be very useful. To
supplement the wide variety of therapy tools, Kathryn developed a series of
products to enhance the quality of life of the older adult and support their
families, friends and caregivers. Specializing in working with those with memory
impairments, she created a series of reminiscence products to encourage
meaningful activities. Sometimes the precious time we have with each other is
easy to take for granted, so these products were designed to help create special
memories. Observing caregiver stress led to the development of

improve the day-to-day ability to recall information at home, at work and for
successful aging and quality of life.
