Hospice of VNS Volunteer Couple Receive Award
Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) volunteers Bob and Wanda Vigar, of
Barberton, received the Hower Community Service Award at a luncheon on September
13, 2008 at the Hower House in Akron. This award is presented annually in
recognition of outstanding community service.
The Vigars, married 61 years, have been active at the Hospice of VNS Care Center
in Fairlawn since 2004. In that time, they have assumed almost every kind of
clerical, outreach and supportive role imaginable. Most frequently, Wanda serves
as receptionist while Bob concentrates on the Central Supply Department of the
Hospice Care Center.
As a team, they have been very successful at recruiting other groups of
volunteers for Hospice. Members of their church, the Firestone Park Presbyterian
Church, and their local AARP committee, #3820, have been instrumental in the
success of Hospice’s Light Up a Life fundraiser and the annual Grounds
Dedication.
This award follows many other achievements in volunteerism for the Vigars. They
have been active in the Meals on Wheels program and Habitat for Humanity. Wanda
also received many professional recognitions during her career as a realtor, and
Bob is a retiree of Firestone.
The Vigars say they consider the time they spend at the Hospice Care Center a
blessing, but they are the true blessing – especially to the many families at
the Care Center they have touched over the years.
