Volunteers Received Honors at Ohio Governor’s Residence

Bob and Wanda Vigar, of Barberton, who dedicate much of their time to  volunteerism, received the “Joined Hearts In Giving” award at the Governor’s residence in Columbus the day before Valentines Day, February 13, 2009. The Vigars were nominated for the award by Terri DeGeorge, Manager of Volunteer Services at the Hospice of VNS Care Center in Fairlawn.

“Joined Hearts In Giving” honors Ohioans married 4Bob and Wanda Vigar 0 years or longer who are at least 60 years old and who share a commitment to volunteerism. The Ohio Department of Aging, in partnership with the First Lady of Ohio, select the recipients of this annual award.

The Vigars, married 61 years, have been active at the Hospice of VNS Care Center since 2004. In that time, they have assumed almost every kind of clerical, outreach and supportive role imaginable. Most frequently, Wanda serves as receptionist while Bob concentrates on the Central Supply Department.

As a team, they have been very successful at recruiting other groups of volunteers for Hospice of VNS. Members of Firestone Park Presbyterian Church and their local AARP committee, #3820, have been instrumental in the success of Hospice’s Light Up a Life fundraiser and the annual Grounds Dedication.

This award follows many other achievements in volunteerism for the Vigars. In September 2008, they were selected to receive the Hower Community Service Award in Akron. They have also been active in the Meals on Wheels program and Habitat for Humanity. Wanda also received many professional recognitions during her career as a realtor, and Bob is a retiree of Firestone.
